<<Welcome to FAQs: frequently asked questions >>

Q. Will brokers remain relevant after Woolworths changes to national buying?

A. Brokers have spent the past two years preparing for national buying. Practically every broker is in a national group if they are not nationally owned. The main States affected by buying office relocation are South Australia and Queensland where the AFBA chapters have collaborated on marketing strategies to maximise local expertise.

Q. How much does it cost to have a broker?

A. Ask some brokers but specify your requirement. Fees can range form 3.5% up to 10% for vendor refill. Foodservice is dearer than retail, and pharmacy dearer again.

Q. How much time does a broker spend merchandising?

A. Whilst it varies by company, recent empirical studies show that merchandisers spend between 85-93% of their time in-store. Whether it is a broker or manufacturer merchandising team, modern territory management and recruitment policies result in merchandisers operating a group of stores within a small radius of their home.

Q. Who authorises promotions with the trade, my broker or me?

A. Both of you. Common business sense dictates that both you and your broker should jointly approve offers to the trade. Alternatively you can allow your broker to operate to your guidelines.
